Our Good Inheritance
“Oh Lord, you are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.” (Psalms 16:5-6)
What is an inheritance? It is something passed down from one family member to another. It also includes the right and status resulting from being born in a certain time or place. It is something owed to one due to his birthright.
The children of Israel came out of Egypt – they left their past life behind them. In Egypt, they were slaves and had no rights of privileges – they had no inheritance.
They crossed the Red Sea, burying the old Egyptian ways and the old nature in the water.
They came to Mt. Sinai, where the power of God descended, His Holy Spirit sealed them, and now they were ready to go on into the promised land.
God wanted them to have a good life: Deut. 8:1-10. They only had to walk daily with Him and to keep His commandments, and then He would continually bless them and keep them safe.
Deut. 4:37-40 says that if they would do this, God would make sure that “they would prosper and live a long time” in the land that He was giving to them.
This word, “prosper”, has many meanings in the Hebrew language: You will push forward and progress, you will be beautiful, cheerful, joyful, loving, merry, pleasant, sweet and well-favored. Who wouldn’t want that for an inheritance?!
Your portion in life has been assigned to you by God. You are not cursed by DNA from your forefathers. When you become a firm believer in Christ, you become a part of a new family with all the rights of inheritance belonging to you. It is your birthright to receive the blessings and the joy of being a child of God.
Remember, in our Scripture reading it says, “He has drawn the lines of our inheritance, and it is good!”
“Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Gal. 4:5-7)
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Romans 8:15-17)
We have been born again into a new family, a new inheritance, a new way of living, a new way of thinking, and great and precious promises are ours.
Yes! I have a good inheritance!
