Heirs of God
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Romans 8:15-17)
We were previously looking at the wonderful inheritance that we have from God. All of His promises are ours – all the riches in glory are an inheritance for the saints.
One story in the Bible tells us of a group of daughters that were going to lose their inheritance because they had no male in the family to claim it after their father’s death. They decided to rise up and to take a stand for what was rightfully theirs.
We read about the daughters of Zelophehad in Numbers 27:1-4.
Their father had died in the wilderness – he did not reach the promised land of God. His name in Hebrew means “shadow of fear”. Something held him back from pushing through, from pressing on for the best things that were to come.
His daughters had to rise up and decide that they were entitled to something. This was in a time when the women did not have the right to an inheritance, only the males held that privilege.
God’s inheritance is totally ours through Christ and He will help us to conquer whatever fear, weakness or other thing that keeps us from getting all that He has for us.
God spoke to the leaders of Israel and told them to give this inheritance to the daughters of Zelophehad. He lives to make intercession for the saints – He is always on our side when we walk with Him.
Num. 36:6-12 The only requirement for them was that they stayed within the boundaries that God had placed. He told them to stay within their own tribe and family – not to bring strangers into their land or they would lose their inheritance.
What does this say to us today?
Stay where God has planted you. Strive for unity and work within the body where you are joined.
We are not to be “unequally yoked with unbelievers.” God has a plan for your life.
This may also speak of the need to abide in the presence of the Lord. When we are in His presence, we hear His voice, we understand His will for our lives, and we are filled with His peace and His joy. He moves in our lives, in our “portion” in life, He provides, He sustains us.
When we choose to stray from “our portion” in life, the plan that God has for us, we are in danger of losing our inheritance. We go beyond the landmark boundaries of His kingdom, and we travel unprotected and without the Father’s blessing.
We are in this world, but truly not of it. We can function in this land where we live – but our hearts can always be longing for Him. This is our rest forever – here we can dwell. It is our inheritance.
