Be stuck like glue

October 11, 2010 1 Comment by Jill Barlock

Psalm 119:30-32 I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me, I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame! I will run the course of Your commandments, for You shall enlarge my heart.

Today, we see so many changes coming at us fast and furious. Technology has changed the world we live in. One day we might purchase a new phone, and within a few months—it is out dated and we want a new one! The same applies for almost everything.

I love to read. I like going to the library, entering into that quiet sanctuary, and being surrounded by books. I love to open the book, feel the pages when I turn them, and to smell the distinct smell of the ink and the pages.  This is becoming outdated! Now, this is being replaced by a computerized “book” or “kindle” and you can get so many books at the touch of your finger.

This is progress, I guess. It makes our life easier and things to go faster and more efficiently.

But this need for the newest and the best sometimes infiltrates the church scene and the believer’s idea of what is good and what is needed.

The psalmist here gives us some advice: I have chosen the way of truth

When we make a choice to serve God—let’s make it real and steadfast.

Eph.4:14 Paul warns us not to be “tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine”

There will always  be something new in the Christian world: a new way to study, worship or think. Most important for us to grow and mature—choose Christ and continue to seek Him, study His word and to never look back.

“I cling to Your testimonies” : Know what the Bible says. Study it with a reputable person or study guide. Then, when things do not seem to be so clear or definite in your walk—cling to that word. Repeat it to yourself, memorize it, and make it your daily bread.

“I will run the course of your commandments”: keep on running and don’t give up!

There is such a need today for perseverance in our walk with God. Don’t give up so easily. Don’t try to find an easier way to live the Christian life. Stay where God has planted you (if it is a doctrinally sound church) and see how God will teach you through it all.

There might be something more modern and convenient out there—but God’s word, His life in you, and the fellowship of His people will always be a rock to stand upon.

I have chosen…I have stuck or clung onto…I will keep on running. Be firm, steadfast and immovable.
