Wishing You Peace

December 17, 2010 No Comments by Jill Barlock

Luke 2:10 “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.”

Luke 2:11 “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”

During this season, we see so many television specials with famous personalities singing the beloved Christmas songs. Celebrating this time with song and dance… and some religiosity. These are often people who would never be caught on camera at any other time in their careers, talking about God or Jesus Christ. They sing with such emotion, but it is all a show.

Christ truly came to change the world–one person at a time. He is still changing me: how about you?

We get tested in the busyness and the commericial aspect of this season. I just want to remember the reason of it all: to know Him and to have peace within–and to share this peace and goodwill with others.

How has your Christmas season been going? I hope that you have the peace of God ruling over your heart.

It is so easy to get distracted from this “peaceful, easy feeling” as one song writer puts it. It is not just a feeling, though. It is

is an assurance that our lives are in God’s hands even though it doesn’t feel like it.

Philipians 4:6-7 “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Amplified Bible

This scripture contains  a wealth of knowledge. I like the definition of peace: “the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation thorugh Christ”. It is that assurance of the reality of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection that brings us peace. It’s that knowing the reality of His word and its effectness in our lives–that brings us inner tranquility. It “garrisons and mounts guard” over our whole being: soul, mind and body. In other words, it protects us from whatever this day or this year will throw at us. If we are habitually going to Him, praying and seeking His guidance–there will be a wall of protection around us–He will keep us in perfect peace!

I believe that this is possible–do you?

A much quoted Christian of long ago said: “Peace is God’s order of tranquility”. St Augustine

When we are in harmony with the will of God– knowing Him, seeking Him and finding our life in Him, then we will, indeed, have peace that transcends human knowledge.

May we each find peace, goodwill (God’s will) in our lives today. He is always available and the Source  of that Peace.
